Nnamdi Alexander Mezue: Assembling Talented Individual Freelancers and Work as an Organised Unit To Deliver Great Service

Brewstarz Ltd started up as a web development company in 2020. However due to the Covid-19 pandemic which set us back a great deal we decided to expand our services to Fillm production and talent management.

Our plan was to assemble talented individual freelancers and work as an organised unit to deliver great service.

Tell us about yourself?

I was born in Nigeria. I’ve been a web designer for 16 years. I have a wife and 2 daughters. I graduated from Civil Engineering from the University of port Harcourt, Nigeria but never practiced.

My first startup was a record label named Maxibeats between 2010 and 2016. Before I shut it down and migrated to the U.K I was able to develop 2 well known music producers named Kezyklef and Benjamz. The latter is a Grammy nominated producer.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

If I were to go back a year I would have waited until 2021 before starting up. It would have saved us alot of fruitless marketing we did in 2020.

If I were to go back 2 years i would have started with all the services I offer now at once.

What problem does your business solve?

Presently our film production department is trying to change the way people watch videos online. We also hope to provide the best possible videos to audiences at the least posssible cost.

Social media is gradually trying to turn websites into archives. We also want to change that while also utilising and integrating social media into websites.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

It has always been my passion for tech and entertainment that drives me. When you are able to work tirelessly and without motivation you tend to achieve alot. Only passion can do that. When things tend to go wrong you ar the only one that believes.

External influences like my father was also key. As a successful estate developer , he was able to give me some major pointers on management and handling the competition.

What is your magic sauce?

We differ from our client in alot ways. Especially because we can tailor our service to any client no matter your budget. We do this while maintaining quality of service.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

Our Film production company has been the driving force so far. We are presently going into production of a feature film . Thanks to a sponsor that believes in us.

Our artist management department currently has 5 celebrities under their care.

At the rate we are going, we intend to produce at least 5 feature films. Increase our client base to 50. Increase staff from 10 to 100. Open a branch office.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

Covid-19 is our biggest problem. Due to its unpredictable nature we can’t make any guaranteed forecasts. It has already set us back 1 year. With new varianra popping up and restrict changing randomly we hardly know what the future holds.

How do people get involved/buy into your vision?

It easy to convince people because I have a track record and previous clients to back me up. Luckily our service delivery has been good enough for our clients to refer new client to us. So we have been surviving majorly on referals. With time we will improve on this.

Suicide: A global phenomenon

Suicide: A global phenomenon

Suicide

“Did you know that close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds?”

Suicide is a global phenomenon and it occurs daily. It is the intentional killing of oneself. Suicide killing was traced back to 434 BC through the story of an early Greek historian, Empedocles. He believed that death was a transformation, therefore he threw himself into the Sicilian volcano in Mount Etna. Other ancient legendaries like Ajax the Great, who killed himself in a Trojan war and Lucretia whose suicide around 510 B.C initiated the revolt that displaced the Roman kingdom with the Roman Republic. The view of suicide started changing during the Renaissance era. People who were scared of eternal damnation as constituted by the church as penalty for suicide committed crimes that it’s penalty would be death sentence.

However, in this 21st century, people no longer care about ‘damnation’. They intentionally kill themselves either by poisoning, hanging, fire arms, drug overdose or even through stabbing themselves. Each time, new strategies for committing suicide trend. It is sad that some suicide victims kill themselves over issues that can be easily resolved had they opened up to someone they trust.

Reasons for committing suicide are not particular. One thing still stands out, suicide is a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the society. No one is spared. Adults and teenagers all commit suicide. Scientists prove that depression is the last stage to develop suicidal thoughts. In psychotherapy and psychiatry, depression is a period of unhappiness or low morale which lasts longer than several weeks in an individual. Some things that can lead to depression include, lack of self love, lack of accomplishment in life, feeling worthless, lack of love and understanding among peers or people you care about, lack of happiness, dissatisfaction at how one’s life turned out to be and so many others. Anything can lead to that feeling of depression, if one isn’t on guard always, on the trail of their emotions. Other factors that can lead to one having suicidal thoughts include; sexual abuse, unwanted pregnancy, testing positive to a killer disease, cyber bullying, financial loss, loss of loved ones, relationship breakups and so many others.

The rate at which this suicide is committed is alarming. People no longer want to find things that make them happy. Just that slightest feeling of sadness, they are already having suicidal thoughts. A lot of individuals also trigger this in people through their response to a question or attitude towards the emotionally drained individual which can easily push them to committing suicide.

Love is the most important aspect in regulating the rate of suicide being committed. Parents should learn to shower their children with so much love. Correct them when something wrong has been done but then correct them with love. Teachers should learn to stop criticising the slow learners publicly, thereby killing their self confidence. The society at large should learn to stop bullying or believing unfounded news by fake blogs thereby indulging in hate speech. A lot of people are very emotional and go through a lot behind close doors.

Life is hard already. People should learn to be kind to one another and avoid talking down on anyone. Depression is real and a lot of individuals especially young adults are victims. The government should set up campaigns to help enlighten people better on the harmful aspect of suicide and how it affects people you leave behind.

Depressed individuals are advised to find things that make their life meaningful. If one can afford it, go on vacations, visit nice places, have wonderful meals, tell people you love that you love them, do things that excites you. One can also confide in someone they trust and discuss about their feelings and get the help they need. Change your circle of friends if they drain your energy. Most importantly, turn to your creator in this trying time. Everyone is special. No one is a mistake. Until you start making yourself happy, no one can really give you that happiness you deserve.

If you are contemplating suicide please contact a suicide prevention organisation close to you immediately for guidance.

Rape: A growing concern

Rape: A growing concern

Rape

The word “Rape” sparks up hate and stands as a kind of reminder for some women today. It is a forceful and unwanted sexual intercourse between a man and a woman. Either of them could be victims. It can also be defined as an unlawful sexual intercourse which is non- consensual (not agreed upon), or when a person forces another person to have sex against his or her will. According to the US Department of Justice new definition of rape in 2012, rape is “the penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim”

Rape: a growing concern

Surprisingly, majority of rape victims are the female counterpart across the globe. According to research, 65% of women in African countries have all been victims of sexual abuse at one point in their life. Some, in the early stage of their life as kids, some as single adults, while others as mothers or wives. It not only affect them physically, it affects these women psychologically, emotionally, socially and otherwise, effects on the victims are longstanding.

An estimated survey of rape has recorded over 100,000 rape cases in Nigeria. Sadly, 55% victims are minors, who were raped by older men, men far more advanced in age. Shocking how these men are family members, relatives or family friends to the victims. In 2014 and 2015, the rate of children less than five years who were sexually molested multiplied. Just last year, 331 cases were recorded.

Reasons for rape hasn’t been ascertained. Facts has it that most women get lured into sex because of financial difficulties. Some believe it’s because of so much exposure of their body to seduce men. Others believe it’s because a woman presents herself in a wrong location and at a wrong time. This is all wrong, even an infant who is a rape victim obviously has no power of speech to ask for money nor the body to seduce. I believe that rapists have all sorts of excuses and justification for their acts. Another reason is lack of sex education. Some men don’t get to understand that “No” means “No”. Some others just lack self control.

There are cases of rape among the male counterparts also, only that it is about 10% and most men never open up about being rape victims. The default in discussions about sexual violence is to think of boys and men as perpetrators and women as victims. But that is an oversimplification that is built on a damaging stereotype about male invulnerability, and it obscures the truth: Boys can be victims, and boys can need help. We’ve just built a world that makes it hard for them to admit it — and for the rest of us to acknowledge it. If we want to raise boys differently, we must start believing that they are equally capable of feeling pain and doing violence.

Many countries take rape crime very seriously. It is regarded as first and second degree of crime depending on the vulnerability of the victim. Sentences for rape can range from one year to even life imprisonment, depending on the status of the country sentencing and victim’s age or circumstance surrounding the crime. In Nigeria, punishment for attempt of rape is 14 years imprisonment in section 242 and life imprisonment in section 243 for actually committing it, both in the Nigerian Law and Constitution.

Regardless of the efforts by the government to curb this crime; parents, teachers and guardians are advised to enlighten the young children better and build a better relationship with these children to know when something wrong happens or about to happen. Mindset needs to be changed. The society needs to stop blaming the girl child if she is the victim of rape. Also the government should take it upon themselves to see that rapists are punished. This will reduce the constant cases and suicides greatly.

It would be nice if girls learn the act of self defence and teach whoever makes an attempt to rape a good lesson.

If you have ever been raped or an attempt has been made to rape you, please report to the closest authority near you. If you are ashamed or have suicidal thoughts, there are organisations that can help you through this ordeal.

Nollywood Movies, Negatively or Positively Influencing the Youths?

Did you know that Nollywood was given its name by a journalist, Norimtsu Onishi, which means “nothing wood” or rather, “creating something out of nothing”. This was because the movies created in the 1960’s were said to be created under volatile and unpredictable circumstances, with near impossible production environments.
